Did you know?
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.

  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.

  1. Lighting up Joliet

    help with 15 foot tree

hello everyone! Is after Halloween so now i'm full force Christmas lol. for the past couple years i have had a 12 food 'mega tree' that i had 1 solid color on. since it was only like 2000 lights i used pvc and it worked fine. Last year i added a tree to the light show display. This tree was 3 colors and also about 12 feet tall. BUT, stupid me still made it out of pvc. obviously this was to heavy for the pvc and the pole was very wobbly and halfway through the year it snapped. This year, i want to replace the pvc with metal pipe and use a pulley system to be able to get to 15 feet. my questions are, what type of pipe can i uses (because i am 15 years old and do not have a lot of help so this is moat likely to be a 2 person job) also, how the heck do you construct the pulley heads with the pvc reducer. I cant figure it out for the life of me! any info will be GREATLY appreciated! thanks!!
  2. I have an existing 25-30' permanent flag pole that I would like to make into a mega tree. It is not telescoping and is too tall to get a ladder to (nor would I want to climb that high). The top of the pole has a pulley that the rope rides upon to raise and lower the flag. My question is that I don't know how to make a topper that would hold the light strings and be able to raise and lower with the existing pulley system. I've searched high and low and haven't been able to find something that I could make that would suffice. I had thought of making it out of treated plywood cut into two sections that could be hinged to allow it to be opened and then closed around the pole, land then hoisted up once the lights were attached. I just don't want to reinvent the wheel so to speak.
