Did you know?
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.
  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.

Is there any groups in Utah?

Hi all, This is my first post. I have been hanging around the forums for a while and thought I would post. Anyway my family and I are going to be moving to Northern Utah towards the end of the year. So I was wondering if there was any groups or get togethers that I could look forward to going to. Thanks, Chris
  2. As far as I know Gemmy hasn't made a complete gingerbread house. But they do make a gingerbread oven inflatable. Which I think will be the closest you will be able to get at the moment. I could be wrong though. I'm still learning about all the different inflatables too. :santasmileyitty: Chris

    New haul!

I found another ad selling blow molds! I guess there are more people starting to sell them out here. Anyway on to the mini haul. I saw an ad late last night advertising some Christmas stuff. I called up the lady and she said that it was too late(around 9pm and we are about and hour away) to come by last night but, I could come by tomorrow if I would like. I said yes of course. We got there this morning to find a GF Santa, GF Camel, Empire wisemen and a Empire set of Mary,Joesph and Jesus. My Blow mold collection has grown from 2 to 12 in the last 2 months! I also got a few other things from the ad. A wireframe Trumpet Angel, a plastic frame Sleigh and 2 Reindeer and a plastic frame Santa and Snowman. All for $30! The lights on the plastic guys are out. But 10 minutes with the light keeper should fix it. I will be posting night pics of the nativity shortly. Enough chat time for pictures!

    New haul!

Update, I got all of the plastic frame guys working again. While I was working on them I noticed that it said copyright 1993 Santa's Best on them. So they are somewhat vintage. The only one I haven't been able to get working fully again is the Angel. It has a 2 channel chaser set on it and I think one of the channels is dead or something. I spent an hour checking all of the bulbs on it and I couldn't get the other half to light up. I may just have to restring it if I can't get the original set working again we shall see. Anyway here are some night pics of them... Chris

    New haul!

Thanks guys for the comments. I wasn't here so I don't know what went down with the whole title thing. I'm sorry if I offended anyone with the title I used. I just thought it would be a cool title considering I got my first nativity featuring Jesus. It was a bad choice on my part. Sorry again to anyone(including Carrie) I offended by using the title I chose, Chris

    5 Foot Santa find

Ask and you shall receive. I was just talking to Darrel the other day, about how blow molds are scarce out here in Utah. But low and behold this morning I was going through the local classifieds and about half way down the page it read "5 Foot Santa $20". So of course I just had to jump on it. Thanks Darrel, I think you may have created a monster. I am now addicted to blow molds. :giggle: This is my third one in 2 months. He looks to be made sometime around the late 80s to early 90s. The number on his back is C952-1201. I think he was made by Genfoam but I'm not sure. He is in good condition. A few scuffs and some fading here and there but I like him. Chris

    5 Foot Santa find

Thanks for giving more info about the Santa. That is cool that he was also produced by Beco. Nice to know. In answer to your PM Richardg, the first hole has a diameter of about 4 inches and the second one is no bigger than a centimeter or two. The light kit is very simple. On the main part there is a screw on the end and then there is a white cap that goes onto that. At least for my GF one. The light kit may be different on the Beco or the newer GF ones I don't know. Here are a few pictures of the one mine has... Hope this helps, Chris

    5 Foot Santa find

Thanks, yes that info helps. Nice to know I was right about it being from Genfoam. From what I found out earlier it looks like the Santa with the red bag was discontinued sometime in the early 90s. The one you posted is the new version with the green bag that is being sold now. I think that the vintage look with the little bit of paint fading. It makes him look better than a new one. But that is just my opinion. Chris

    My First (real) Haul

Very nice finds. I know that the Mickey and Minnie are hard to come by at a price like that. Especially in that condition. Good going on the soldiers too. I want to start collecting those guys too. Chris

    5 Foot Santa find

Thanks, that's cool that you have one as well and yes it is a very tall mold. It is as tall as my little brother and about 3/4 as tall as I am. I'm 5ft 6in. Chris

    Halloween Decorations over The street.

Yep it was a severed leg. I can see where you would get a dead bird from it though. It was an interesting sight but cool at the same time. I'm pretty amazed at how the pictures came out from your Iphone. The pictures I took of it from my phone came out pretty bad. Apple did a good job on the camera in the new Iphone.

    New to snow country (Utah)

Just a heads up too just in case you don't know. There are 2 big displays out here in Utah that I know of. RichardH's "Holdman Christmas" and Marty Slack's "Christmas Utah". There are a bunch of us little guys scattered around here too. Thanksgiving Point also has their holiday lights that you can come down and see. I ran out of time last year to go see it but I plan on going this year. Chris

    New to snow country (Utah)

Hey Mark, I'm doing good. I'm excited that the next decorating season is upon us again. :santasmileyitty: Yea, it seems that a lot of people came up here from SoCal. I have met a few people out here that are originally from down there. Where did you guys move from? I usually start decorating around the 2nd week of November for my display. Also like I mentioned in my last post I am good friends with RichardH. I also helped him last year setting up his display and plan on helping him again this year. We will probably start working on his display in the coming weeks. Looked at the picture you posted. You have a nice collection going there. Just setup your display like you usually would and you should be just fine. That is what I did and for the most part everything went fine for me last year. It was still a learning experience for me though. Because I had never decorated in the snow before. Being from San Diego we dealt with a little bit of rain but never any snow in the winter. Chris

    New to snow country (Utah)

Hey, you sound like me around this time last year. I moved up here to Utah from San Diego last October. Last year we had a cold spurt around this time.(like we are now) Then about mid month it warmed backup into the 70s for a little bit and then finally towards the end of November the heavy snow began to fall. There still were some days were it was cold. But thankfully the heavy snow waited until I was done setting up. So to answer about the weather. Even though we are cold right now there should be some warmer days ahead, but each year is different so we shall see. You should be able to get you display up without too much trouble. Although there maybe a few cold days involved. How big is your display? To answer you question. You don't really need to do anything specific to the inflatables. Just dust the snow off of them before you turn them on and you are all set. As for the plugs it has been my experience so far that they are just fine on the ground. I had mine on the ground last year under at least 6 inches of snow and my GFCIs didn't trip once. You could try to cover them but then water most likely still get in. Water is tricky like that. :giggle: As Chuck said, you can talk to RichardH too. I'm good friends with him. He is where I got most of my info from about decorating in the snow. Chris

Singing Pumpkin - Video Projection Test

Makes sense, I will have to do that to some of ours one of these days. I want to add to my Halloween display as well and do a yard display in addition to the haunted house we put up on Halloween.

Singing Pumpkin - Video Projection Test

Those are awesome. I didn't get to see your Halloween display last year. Are you using the same setup this year? Btw are you using the stakes that come with the tombstones? Or are you using your signature Home Depot stakes? I tried to use the ones that came with our tombstones last year but the wind kept blowing them over. But we do get more wind up here than you do over there.

Singing Pumpkin - Video Projection Test

True, true wouldn't want to leave the projector outside. Especially if it decides to rain on us again like it did this weekend. And the fact that someone could take off with it that wouldn't be good. That's cool that he was nice enough to send you another copy. Good thinking making backup copies too. Make sure to take a video of it once do you set it up.

Singing Pumpkin - Video Projection Test

Ah so you found the video, huh? Sweet! That looked great. That is sure to be a hit. I can't wait to see a full size version. When are you going to have it setup fully?
  24. First I want to say... ChrisL, We are very sorry for the loss of your Mom. We know that she is in a better place looking down onto you with pride. Ok, now to the topic of this thread. Today my 2 inflatable soldiers arrived. Thank you ChrisL. They look great. FedEx showed up bright and early at 7:30am to deliver them to me. We had some wind whirling around this morning, so I had to wait until now to get good pictures of them. I set them up in front of my house to take the pictures. They will go great with my display. Thanks again ChrisL. Chris

    Mounting Wire Frames on Roof

I would also be interested in knowing what is the best way to do this. I have a skiing polar bear I got at Home Depot last year and I would like to mount it on my roof. So that was he looks like he is skiing down the roof. My roof has the asphalt shingles and has a maybe a little bit more than 30 degree angle to it. It looks as though Toymakr's suggestion would work the best for me but I'm not sure. I attached a picture of what my polar bear looks like. I know it is not the best picture and it is in someone else's display but I couldn't find it on Home Depot's website anymore. Chris
