Did you know?
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.
  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.

This is the best! It only goes off if there is a large animal or a person! I have 4 sensors in the yard. I WILL KNOW if someone is outside. The best part is only you know since it beeps in the house. You can catch them red handed. I have had these for 3 years now and there still working like a charm. Batteries last 2 years! Hope this helps. You can get one at your local radio shack.

Edit: Forgot I made a video of them working.

Jason

Cool item! I think I will be investing in this unit and some extra sensors myself since we can't fence our yard! (HOA rules, which I find dumb!) And these should do the trick!

Thanks for the links and the video of how they work!

BTW: Can each sensor be set for a different number of beeps to let you know EXACTLY which one is being tripped? And how is that done, if possible? Never mind, found the answer at the Chamberlains website in the add on sensor owner/operating manual.

Video cams is a nice thing to have.

We have several network cameras to monitor the garden and some software that also sends email and SMS when motion is detected.

That saved us a 150 feet lightrope last year when 3 young men was trying to steal it.

They ran when they saw me comming out of the house but i found one of them hiding behind my car. When i asked him what he was doing there he said he was checking my tire pressure because ne noticed that i have very low profile tires and it is very important to have the right pressure. I had a really hard time trying to keep a serious face :-)

We ended up with them putting the lightrope nicely back on the poles and i didnt report them to the Police.

These stories are crazy. My display is tiny, only about 4000 lights, but in my neighborhood, two strings is a lot. Every year something happens. Something is stolen etc. Last year they decided to pull two light bulbs out of each strand of the lights running down my driveway so none would work. So, this year, I put up a camera. The kids in my neighborhood aren't very bright, so i'm hoping it will work as a deterent... If not, It seems to get a pretty good picture (to the point where you could see some of my neighbors drunkenly walking down their driveway in the dark) that hopefully we'll be able to catch them. It's pretty easy to narrow down who in my neighborhood it could be. :121_reindeer:

I can't get the stupid VCR to record the image from the camera no matter what I do. It's just a 2.4G wireless camera, no brand that I can find on it. I am using two of the cords with the white (audio) and yellow (Video) cables, no combination works, even from the receiver directly to the VCR. Guess I will just hope that the motion sensor wakes me up.

I may break down and buy another game camera tomorrow, our last one broke when it got too cold one night though.

No lol it was an issue with me not having the cords in correct. I finally broke down and got the magnifyer and read where it says video IN and video OUT and I have it recording now.

I can only record 4 hours at a time though, the tapes say up to 6 but the VCR doesn't give me an option. Being as I haven't slept through the night in forever it shouldn't be a big issue.

It sucks bad that this kind of stuff happens. I have been decorating for 32 years. We have had vandalism and theft every year, usually several times a year for the past 28 years. I have already been hit 4 times this year. Last year it was 9 times. This something that we expect. We know it will happen and it is just part of Christmas for us. We are now installing a four camera security system with 24 hour taping.

sometimes our cameras have unknown benefits..

Ihave several cameras on my house and display... I change the angles christmastime to show a wider stance... a house around the corner from me was busted into during the day the other day... the police saw my cams and asked if they shot that house.. they did not.. however someone said they saw a black suv in front of that house speed off at some point... turns out the suv drove by my house (I pulled video for the time frame)..

police were able to enhance the pics.. get an ID and a good partial plate from it and last I heard "a person of interest was in custody".... I guess the person sliced themselves up pretty good breaking the window of the house and being met with the family dog and alarm...
