Did you know?
  • The first recorded date of Christmas being celebrated on December 25th was in 336, during the time of the Roman Emperor Constantine. A few years later, Pope Julius I officially declared that the birth of Jesus would be celebrated on that day.
  • Santa Claus's sleigh is led by eight reindeer: Dasher, Dancer, Prancer, Vixen, Comet, Cupid, Dunder (variously spelled Donder and Donner), and Blixem (variously spelled Blixen and Blitzen), with Rudolph being a 20th-century inclusion.
  • Outdoor Christmas lights on homes evolved from decorating the traditional Christmas tree and house with candles during the Christmas season. Lighting the tree with small candles dates back to the 17th century and originated in Germany before spreading to Eastern Europe.
  • That big, jolly man in the red suit with a white beard didn’t always look that way. Prior to 1931, Santa was depicted as everything from a tall gaunt man to a spooky-looking elf. He has donned a bishop's robe and a Norse huntsman's animal skin. When Civil War cartoonist Thomas Nast drew Santa Claus for Harper's Weekly in 1862, Santa was a small elflike figure who supported the Union. Nast continued to draw Santa for 30 years, changing the color of his coat from tan to the red he’s known for today.
  • Christmas 2018 countdown has already begun. Will you be ready???
  • Why do we love Christmas? It's all about the traditions. In this chaotic world we can miss the "good old days." Christmas reminds us of that time.

Hey All,

Yes, I live in Davenport, IA and seem to be really behind this year. I have all these big plans but don't seem to have the time to get things started as my wife, Karen, and I are now in the middle of painting, carpeting and attempting to put crown molding around our ceiling of our bedroom. I may only have a couple of months to do some major changes with lighting and channel assignments. Oh well, it's my own fault! :) Chris, glad you liked the display. It is really quite the neighborhood as everyone seems to get into the spirit. I am hoping to get some pics & video up on my site (www.candycanecorner.com) this year. Oh, that reminds me, I also have to update my site! GEEESH!! I may have to hire someone to video my display as I don't have much luck in doing it. Bruce, PM me if you have any questions or you can email me at work ( James.W.Peachee@usps.gov ) as I don't get in this site much untill after I'm done with my display.

Later All, and happy lighting!

James

Hi James. I'm hailing from Rock Island. Saw your display last year. First year for me and I'm behind of course.

And to others, Harris Pizza didn't come up in the discussion? Heading there tonight!:D

I am mainly blowmolds and LED's so far. Yes, gotta love Frank's pizza (and cheese bread)!

My folks still live in Moline - we hit Frank's every time we come out to visit - good stuff! I used to get the Strombolli sandwiches a lot too. I was born in Silvis so we hit that a lot when I was a small one...

That is one thats on my list was just looking for more. Its not the size of the display its the thought and effort you put into it. One string or ten thousand strings you took the time to do it and thats what counts. Dont sell your self short. Good luck this year. I'll just have to drive till I find more lights.

I love that the displays in the QC are growing! as a former qc person i have always enjoyed the lights. I really miss the memorial park display, i am still looking for the displays to purchase. and i will never forget the display in north davenport that was animated long before animation was big. If i get back before christmas i will have to check it all out.
