I rent two 10 X 20 commercial storage units, but feel that I am not making best use of the space. I use quite number of Rubbermaid 18 gallon tubs, and end up stacking them on top of each other. I have had them collapse due to heat during the summer, and last year found quite a mess when I went to the storage unit during July. The tubs are simply too heavy to stack too high. The ones on the bottom get soft from the heat and get crushed. I would like to make some inexpensive (I'm already in trouble I know) "shelves" or racks that would support one or two tubs on each shelf, but allow me to stack the tubs maybe 8 or 10 high. That way I could maximize the height of the storage unit which is about 15 feet high. Obviously metal shelves are cost prohibitive, wood take too much time, talent and $$. I was thinking of making something out of PVC fittings and cheap osb for shelves, but run into the same $$ issues for the number of elbows and T's I would need. Any cheap ideas out there that I can build?

Lowes (and I'm sure HD) have plastic shelving units that just snap together. I have a bunch in my garage.

Don't use Rubermaid. Get the Sterlite ones. It takes alot for those to give. If anything over time the lids will finally break but the bins themselves hold up well. My ex in-laws had TONS of indoor decor and we would stack those suckers 6 tall and not have problems.
