Ok, the topic pretty much is what I am needing help with. Somehow over the weekend I have got some sort of malware called security tool that is driving my computer nuts. I am posting this in safe mode because the computer will not hardly do anything in regular mode. Anyone have any clue besides all the stuff you can google that so far is not working for me. I dl malwarebytes but cannot get it to work and take out the problem.

Will malware bytes run in safe mode? combofix? dr web cureit? Stinger? All of those tools should be available in safe mode.

The best program I have ever used for malware and spyware is called Spybot: Search & Destroy.

Its free and has worked really well for me. I have saved several systems over the last couple years without wiping everything out.

I've had worse. I gave up and bought another Hard Drive. I didn't splurge and get a big one. I was going to end up with two working Hard Drives in the end anyway.

I disconnected the original HD, made the new hard drive the master, loaded windows and decent AV software, plus all the updates. Then I connected the original HD up as a slave/secondary HD. I could then access all the 'data' on the original HD and carefully copy all the data files I wanted to save. No programs, just data. The files were scanned before they were copied. Then I formated the original drive.

Time consuming, but it worked. Also learned a lesson I don't care to repeat.

I use Avira. either boot to a bootable USB drive and use the command line version. Or as tazman said, use another drive and run the virus scanner.

Using an Antivirus program like Avast or Avira doesn't ever seem to be enough. Most of the computers that I have had to go and delete Malware on always seemed to have an up to date antivirus program, usually AVG or Norton. There are 3 important programs that I install after every Windows installation I complete.

#1 Avast Antivirus
#2 Firefox
#3 Spybot: Search and Destroy

This combination has been running great now for over a year and have never had any major issues with malware, spyware, or viruses.

I agree, and be sure to have the spybot teatimer running. Except, I use Google Chrome and IE.

Google Chrome is a good alternative to firefox but I have only used it a couple of times. I just always seem to use Firefox.

Well it took me about a day but I think I got it. I swear this was one of the worse ones that I have had to deal with. I consider myself pretty computer literate but this one had me pulling my hair out. Hopefully it is gone for good now.

That's good that you were able to get the malware out. I remember one of the first heavily malware infected computers that I had ever worked on. It was so bad that no matter what program I would try to run I would get a pop up telling me that it was infected with a virus. I was so frustrated that I gave up because formatting the drive wasn't an option. That's when a friend showed me Spybot.
