View Full Version : Is Head's Up gone? Or in transition?

I went a way for a couple weeks and everything has changed? I've been playing detective looking at the threads to see what happened. Stiil not sure. But...

Did we really loose Head's Up? Even when I wasn't keeping up, I always checked Head's Up. Especially during the off season!

Anyway, I'm hoping it's just in transition and hasn't made it back up yet. Chuck says we're down to "tweaking" so that worries me. Does anyone know if it's coming back?

I'm a bit lost here too because I haven't been on very much in the last few weeks. I think that it is a pretty safe bet that "Heads Up" will be back. Chuck once posted that it was his favorite forum.

I hope it comes back. I miss my "On Line Shopping" thread... got some updates but no place to put them!

I thought it was gone! That is why Chuck made "Dashers Dinner"

I was under the impression that this was replacing X-tremely Off Topic...

Want to sit around with a group of friends and just shoot the breeze? Dasher's Dineris just the place!

Please remember our fundamental rules of family friendly, positive and Christmas centric... though we can probably drift from the Christmas centric rule a bit.

This forum will be watched very closely. Threads will disappear after several weeks of inactivity. Bottom line: enjoy yourself. Order a burger, some fries and a coke.

Now, what's on your mind?

Daniel, Dashers Diner is a replacement for the old Off Topic forum. Nothing in what Chuck posted relates to the old Heads Up forum at all.

I know it doesent say anything directly to off-topic but it does hint that this is replacing it.

Here is a PM I got from Chuck regarding Heads-Up:

<<...As for Heads Up... I'm trying to figure how to redefine the forum so it doesn't get filled up with the wrong stuff. Stay tuned.

I always thought that forum did pretty well. It was mainly store sales heads up with a few Ebay sales heads up.

Daniel, take a deep breath, the thread is about Head's Up not Off-Topic.

Here's my thoughts on a new "Heads Up" forum:

Call it something more bland, yet more descriptive, like "Bargain Alerts". This prevents people from posting other announcements there.
Have Chuck (or another moderator) delete posts as soon as the alert expires, e.g. a thread called "Target is now at 50% off" can go away once the "Target is now at 75% off" thread starts, or certainly by the end of January.
Classifieds(items for sale by another member)aren't allowed -- they go in the Classified section. Exception: members, like Darryl or Tim R. who run a regular web-business.Here are the rules for the "Bargain Alert" forum of the woodworking site I frequent, which works very well for them:

Use this forum to post info about a great bargain you have found on any woodworking related item. Please be aware that posts in this forum will be deleted once they expire or if they are found to be unworthy. Please, no "gloats" unless it is a deal that others can get. The items posted should be new and/or refurbished merchandise, and must be available to more that just the posting individual. Also, suffecient information should be included that would allow an individual to find the item, preferably on the web or through a local store.

Tim,

I agree with a rename, and strickter rules on postings,my only concern isthat every year, I go back to the heads up from a year ago to find out when walmart went to 50%, Target to 75, etc. I personally would prefer that they be marked "Expired" instead of deleted. Similar to slickdeals.net (great for computer hardware).

I also used to search through heads-up to see whether something was a real bargain or not. Just because Home Depot puts Extension cords on sale, does not mean they're a good price. So I'd search to see what others had reported in the past, and then make a decision...

In general, that's my feeling on all of the forums. Please, pleaseno more deletions. In the old forum, chuck used to move stuff to read-only in a different database. Lights, Lights 2003 (read-only), etc. If it's a space issue, maybe it could be safely exported, and made available for download. But I digress...

Heads up was my favorite forum.I, asdo most of ushave quite an investment inmy display, but it's nothing compared to what it would've cost without the Heads-up on the latest greatest deal.

Good points, but like they say in the financial industry (where my wife used to work) "Past performace is no guarantee of future results". In other words, what Wal-Mart did last year doesn't mean they'll do it again this year, and a great deal last year may never be repeated again (heck, 18 months ago we were getting $1.50 gas -- try holding out for that today!). But I agree, it's at least something of a compass to go by...

Very true. In fact, they usually follow that up with an additional phrase...

"PeopleCAN and DO loose money..."

Sounds about right. :-)
