Is it neccessary to use three prong extension cords coming from the pigtails. The pig tails have 3 prong ends but my extension cords are only 2 pronged.

If i Understand the question, the pigtails from your LOR have three prongs. The round one must be grounded to the LOR box somewhere. Most christmas light and lighting in general do not have grounding plugs. A two prong (hot and neutral) string of lights will plug in no problem. As long as you do not need grounding down the line somewhere, you can plug a two prong (wire) extention cord in without problem. Just NEVER break the grounding prong off a plug to be able to use it in a two prong outlet.
