View Full Version : Locking Rite-time boxes?

Hi all,

Some of you folks who've been around here more than a year or two will remember the Rite Time boxes that many people used to house controllers.

I have a couple of controllers in these boxes, and I'm wondering how others lock them? The built-in "padlock hole" is a joke -- you could get inside the box with little more than a tug on the lock and the plastic would shatter (especially in December Minnesota temps). I padlocked them for "visual deterrance" but they would NOT have held up. And one of them broke before the end of the season when I went inside for maintenance...

So I'm wondering, do others that use these boxes lock them? If so, how? I've considered adding a metal locking hasp, or a metal device that wraps the entire box and gets padlocked, etc. I'm open to other ideas.

Thanks,
-Tim

I don't lock mine. I just try to hide them out of plain view.

My controller is not really locked; it has plastic screws that hold the cover down tight so that it’s semi water proof. The back is screwed down to one of my porch pillars. Being plastic, a good kick and it would be free, though I’ve had zero problems with anything in my display; knock on wood.

Short of taking the whole controller, you could slow them down by placing a length of HVAC hanger strapping around the cover and secure it with a bolt.

For theft, with most of my boxes, I padlock them through the lock-hole and use a cable through the padlock to lock to a nearby fixed object. With these rite-times, the locking hole wasn't sufficient for that so I ran the cable up through one of the power cord holes, then put a padlock inside the box (preventing it from pulling back out). But I'd like to lock them shut as well...
