What do you guys use for snow in your christmas villages? Here are my options:

Spray Snow: Snow in an aerosol can (found at Michaels)

Pros: Easy to do
Cons:

1. Would have to spray around the roads
2. Wouldn't cover the wire holes in the display
3. Would get everywhere
4. Would have to be resprayed every few years
2. Roll of snow: Flat cotton in a roll with little sparkles and is 8 ft. long (Also found at michaels)

Pros:

1. Looks more realistic
2. Can cover the wire holes
3. Comes in the length of my display (8 ft.)
Cons:

1. Would have to cut around the roads
2. I would have to remember where to place the cutouts year after year
3. Cotton: A bag of cotton

Pros:

1. Easy
2. Will cover the wire holes
Cons:

1. Looks unrealistic
2. Might get caught in the trolley
3. Messy

I don't know what to choose. They all have there pros and cons. I would really prefer not to go with the cotton. I need a material that can cover up my wire holes. I want your guys opinion or ideas for a different snow material I haven't listed here.

Thanks,

Terri

The snow in the first link looks pretty messy. We have four cats and trust me when I say the cats will get into it. I will have to try to make the snow in the second link.

Does anyone even know if spray snow will stick to plywood?

What about polyester batting, spray glue and glitter?

You could spray glue the batting and sprinkel glitter on it. Let it dry.

The stuff I use falls from the sky, and although it can be very pretty, can be a PITA to get off the driveway and other places I don't want it.

The only problem with that is that if it ever needs to be taken off for whatever reason (ie: Gets dirty, needs to be replaced, change the layout, etc.) It would be a pain to get off. Maybe if I put velcro or something on it to hold it down.

I'll respond to the name of the thread and not really what Kirk was looking for.

I buy up as many different types of bagged snow as possible each each. There are always four or five different varieties in the different stores and I can usually pick up at 75% off or better. I take one large plastic tote and mix up several bags of each type of snow getting a good mix of big flake, small flake, glitter type and the irredescent flakes in one container. I use that for my villages and it gives the snow a lot more "depth" instead of being uniform.

Now I know that isn't what you were looking for Kirk but it is "What I use for Snow".

I use the roll snow
I don't have any roads or a permanent setup
I use a 10' shelf in the main room + fireplace mantle
Then the credenza in the dining room
So there was a snowstorm, but the plows haven't been out yet :D

I use a fine powder-like snow. Its much smaller then the flakes with the lemax village collections. I get mine at local hobby shops and train shows they are usually pretty cheap. I use this for my train display (8x17'). It works with N HO and O scales. There are also some people that use baking powder but that is light and it does blow easily.

I use 45 x 96? sheets of buffalo snow. I called the manufacturer and they sold it to me at the same price that they sell it to the big stores. You just have to buy a case. If one sheet gets messed up one year, I have plenty to replace it with.

My mother uses this for the village she puts up. It works alright and I believe it's reuseable. YMMV
